Players can choose one gathering skill and one crafting skill per character.

Gathering

The gathering skills allow collection of materials which can be used by the crafting professions.

Butchering

Butchering allows a character to extract valuable materials from the carcasses of non-intelligent beings- basically anything without pockets falls into this category. The butchering skills allows a player to gather materials for either the apothecary crafting skill (in the form of concoction stabilizers, main ingredients, or additives) or the cultivation gathering skill (in the form of nutrients).

Cultivating

Cultivating allows a character to grow seeds found throughout the world into plants and fungi which are used by the Apothecary skill. At max level, a cultivator can have up to four plots growing simultaneously. A plot requires a seed to begin the growing process and can accept soil, water, and nutrients in turn through the growing process. Seeds can be grown into full plants without the use of any additives, but using any modifiers increases the chance that your plant will "crit", giving you additional items. e.g. You retain your seed, allowing you to grow it again, or you may get extra pieces of the finished plant.

Magical Salvaging

Salvaging allows a character to extract valuable materials from existing "magic" items. The extracted materials are magical fragments or essences. These materials are used by the Talisman Making crafting skill.

The items that can salvaged may say they are a type of salvage or they may be a weapon or armor. They are usually loot from a kill.

How do you salvage? Bring up the Abilities Menu ('v' is the current default for this window). Select the Crafting tab. Click on the Salvaging icon. Your mouse will now look like a hammer. You can try salvaging items in your inventory by clicking the hammer on those items.

Currently in Open Beta, it sometimes will show a little 2s yellow Salvaging progress bar near the bottom of the screen. Some times it may ask you to choose what fragment you prefer to extract from that magical item. This process may succeed or fail. Some times it will say nothing and do nothing. Some times it will say you cannot salvage it. Sometimes it appears to be trying to salvage but later may say you do not yet have the skill required (note these information messages may be in the Chat window which can be underneath your Abilities window).

Successfully salvaging an item gives a chance for your salvaging skill to increase.

Scavenging

Scavenging allows a character to extract valuable materials from the bodies of intelligent beings. Basically anything with pockets falls into this category. In addition to vendor trash, scavenged materials are used in the Cultivating, Apothecary, and Talisman Making skills.

Apothecary

The apothecary skill allows the character to make potions and essences. The process starts by specifying a container, a main ingredient and zero to three additional ingredients. Additional ingredients are used to stabilize the brew and add other effects, such as increased potency or increased duration for a potion. If the character has sufficient identical materials in the backpack to craft another item, the brew button will be replaced by a repeat button.

Talisman Making

Talisman Making allows the character to craft talismans. These items can be added to appropriate pieces of equipment to bolster their effectiveness. The creation process requires a container and four different types of materials to complete. These materials are: Fragment (obtained by salvaging equipment), Magic Essence (obtained by salvaging equipment), Curio (obtained by scavenging) and Gold Essence (obtained by scavenging or made by apothecaries, from plants grown by cultivators).
