Overview
Dwarfs are consummate craftsmen. Their reverence for the past, combined with their innate sense of perfectionism, makes even the smalles change of innovation to these ancient processes a frightening prospect for most Dwarfs.
This is not the case for Engineers.
Engineers embrace the relatively "new" arts of gun-making and machinery. "New" is a relative term, of course, given that such contraptions have only been around for a few thousand years.
An explosion is the ultimate form of mechanical advantage, so it's no big surprise that the skills of the Dwarf Engineer extend well along these lines. From guns to grenades, he is a deadly ranged combatant who will pelt you with lead from afar and blast you to bits as you close in. He excels when fighting multiple opponents, as many of his explosive attacks are capable of devastating enemies who pack too closely together. The Engineer offers an outstanding blend of flexible firepower which makes him a truly deadly and clever combatant.
The only thing deadlier than a simple bomb is a complicated one; at least, that's the way an Engineer sees it. Using nothing more than whatever odds and ends they have at hand, Engineers can create a broad variety of useful objects with various purposes and functions. Some of them are even safe enough to give to others. From grenades of various types, to mechanical weapon upgrades, the engineer and his allies can use these devices to significantly enhance or supplement their own effectiveness in combat.

How To Play
As an Engineer, the heart of your job is to rain destruction on the heads of your enemies. Like other ranged combatants, you prefer to avoid the frontline. However, unlike most other ranged classes, you reach the peak of your power at a relatively short range. You must maneuver wisely, positioning yourself so that you can strike at your target without exposing yourself to their attacks. You are a capable melee fighter, and you can strike at extended range, but your best attacks – grenades, blunderbusses, artillery bombardment, and more – require a closer position.
Before fighting, you want to make sure you are buffed with Flak Jacket and Burn Salve. Your first task after that is to decide which turret you want to place. Gun Turret is great for single-target DPS and Flame Turret and Bombardment Turret are better when you have multiple targets. Make sure you consider the Passive Upgrades that are available for each turret as you level. Your choice of abilities is going to vary depending on your character level, the career mastery that you choose and what kind of situation you are in. As you level, you are able to be more careless in PvE than you would be in RvR because NPC mobs do a lot less damage than player characters.
You will want to try to throw your Acid Bomb at the mob before shooting with Incendiary Rounds. The reason you want to throw Acid Bomb first is because it reduces corporeal resistance and Incideniary Rounds do corporeal damage. If you shoot first and bomb afterwards, the ticking DOT will do less damage to the target. Now this is where it begins to get tricky. Some people like to throw down Friction Burn when the mob gets closer and some debate that it isn't worth the AP. Again, it all depends on your current situation. Also, your ability rotation is going to be highly dependant on the career mastery that you chose. For example: Riflemen prefer Gun Blast and Focused Fire while Grenadiers go with Firebomb and Sticky Bomb (after Acid Bomb is on the mob, of course). Spanner Swipe is great on PvE mobs as they tend to flee when they are almost dead. Just make sure your mob is hexed first.
If you have a tank or healer with you, you can AOE many mobs at once. It is up to you to figure out how many mobs you are comfortable with taking down. Once you have the mobs gathered, throw Acid Bomb onto them. Use Friction Burn and then Sticky Bomb if you are a Grenadier. Fragmentation Bomb works as well. After applying a few DOTs, use Blunderbuss Blast to finish them off.
As for RvR, this is also highly dependent on what career mastery you have chosen. Riflemen tend to stick to the back and offer single-target DPS with a bit of AOE. Grenadiers shift from the back to the front as they throw multiple AOE grenades and offer protection to casters and healers by using Barbed Wire while they are on the front-line. Tinkerers are usually out front while throwing grenades or shooting their gun and using Electromagnet to bring several targets to one location so that warbands can focus-fire AOE attacks to one spot.
But the one thing all types of Engineers are good for is CC with their vast assortment of knockbacks, knockdowns, interupts and snares. This is why the class is described as "defensive DPS". Shoot the incoming Black Orc with Point Blank and see him soar; throw down a Land Mine or blow up your turret with Self-Destruct to knockdown your enemies; toss a Flashbang Grenade into a group of healers and interupt their casting; prevent a player from fleeing by smacking them with your Spanner Swipe. There are a few others but you get the idea.
How To Defeat
Perhaps the best way to deal with an Engineer is to fight him from afar. If you can effectively out damage him at long range he will be at a serious disadvantage. If you must get in close, be prepared to kill him quickly. Unlike most other ranged attackers, the Engineer loses little in terms of effectiveness in close quarters. He is certainly more vulnerable than a career designed to engage in melee, but this vulnerability does not make him easy meat.
